12/24/2023 0 Comments Daddy home 2 cast![]() Likewise, while the film revolves around slapstick and silly humour, there is an occasional, if rare, high-brow joke. For example, feminism and gun-ownership get a two-for in one particularly memorable scene, while one could dissect the characters of all the men in this family, and come out with debatable results. Albeit rare, the movie does have some interesting jokes on current social issues. Nevertheless, if one can switch their brain off, this film is not a complete waste of time. The film is silly, at times stupid, and should be approached accordingly. There are no It’s a Wonderful Life-esque character arcs, and no Christmas Carol shaped revelations. Ultimately, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, but there is no huge depth to Daddy’s Home 2. Meanwhile, Ferrell and Wahlberg present the typical ‘child seeking affection from parents’ plotline, but with an obvious, and welcome twist to the overtold story. Both struggle to make themselves understood in a more welcoming contemporary society, as shown by Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell. On one hand, we have the alpha-male, naturally played by Mel Gibson, and on the other, the stereotypical ‘sissy’, played by John Lithgow. Still, there are occasional flashes of intelligence within the movie, and despite its obvious ‘we hated each other, but now we understand’ plotline, the relationships could say a lot about male identity in the modern world. Likewise, while the writers occasionally break the fourth wall by poking fun at ongoing events within the movie itself, these jokes don’t merely fall flat, but represent a team of writers that seem uncomfortable with writing. Most notably in and around the half-way point, the story falls flat alongside the jokes, and it seems to take a while for the movie to pick back up. Largely slapstick and silly, the jokes can become quite repetitive. If any harsh negatives should be thrown toward Daddy’s Home 2, it’s that the movie seems to rely on comedy to tell its story, rather than the other way around. As a Christmas movie, however, there is much more scope for a film of this ilk to find success, and it seems Daddy’s Home 2 did just that. Indeed, January to November it seems that movies of this ilk are generally thrown out of cinemas as quickly as they are let into them, and rapidly find themselves in bargain baskets. The results of this are instantly discernible, as the obvious family-feel of the movie arrives with added acceptability for an audience. While the original was a mess of weird timing, for example, cramming a Christmas feeling into an April day for a November audience, director Sean Anders learned his lesson and simply made a Christmas movie. Firstly, unlike the original, Daddy’s Home 2 is a veritable Christmas movie. Reflected in last weekend’s American box office, audiences appear to have welcomed the sequel with a warm embrace, and for a number of reasons. The first answer to all of these questions is a remarkable 'yes'. Naturally, parallels will be drawn with the forgettable original and audiences will ask if it was worth making a sequel, and if the writers have anything new to add. Regardless of the incredible cast, however, Daddy’s Home 2 emanates from a ‘meh’-shaped cloud after its first outing. This time, they come with surprising help from heavy-hitters John Lithgow and Mel Gibson. Next Wednesday, 22nd November, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg return with the sequel to their 2015 Box Office hit, Daddy’s Home.
